The most significant match between Palermo and Sampdoria was naturally that of 9 May 2010, the penultimate matchday of Serie A with the Blucerchiati fourth and the Rosanero fifth: a victory would have earned them overtaking and almost certain qualification for the Champions League, but instead Delio Rossi's team did not go beyond 1 – 1 and had to settle for the Europa League.
