Palermo, Ranocchia and Segre can no longer be touched
News: Palermo, Ranocchia and Segre can no longer be touched. Fragile and unrecognizable in the last season and in the first matches of 2025/26, but in Palermo’s useful streak he is the real engine of the ascent: the midfield, masterfully led by the Segre-Ranocchia duo, has finally found that harmony and incisiveness that were previously only seen in flashes. If in the first part of the first round the coach opted more for rotations, also due to the injury of the number 10 at the end of September, now he is unlikely to give up the solidity of his golden pair. Since the start of the winter transfer window the club had decided not to intervene in midfield: Inzaghi was finding his references for the starting eleven in Segre and Ranocchia, any additions would have risked disrupting the hierarchies and interrupting the growth path of the two. Their level has risen further in 2026, thanks above all to the ability to maintain the same incisiveness between the defensive and offensive phases. An Achilles’ heel was represented by the holes that (together or in turns) they left in the midfield for the opponent’s counterattack, but a similar scenario has been seen less and less; setup errors have also decreased and the connection with the advanced department is much more efficient, thanks above all to the connection work that Palumbo does.
