From 12 to 20 September 2026, the Teatro Massimo in Palermo hosts one of the most beloved masterpieces of Italian melodrama: Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni. The realist opera par excellence returns to the stage in the Sicilian capital in a production that promises to combine tradition and great emotional impact. Taken from a short story by Giovanni Verga, the work is the manifesto of musical realism. Set in a town in the Sicilian countryside on Easter day, it tells a drama of jealousy, honor and revenge. At the center of the plot is the love triangle between Turiddu, the young Santuzza (seduced and abandoned by him) and Lola, an old flame of his now married to the carter Alfio.
